Vastu (part 01)

Today we will start a conversation about Vastu – a very ancient Indian Vedic teaching, about how to create a harmony of the primary elements that exist outside and within us. The basis of this doctrine is Vastu-purusha, this is a subtle-material deity who infuses the body of the house, same as the paramatma infuses into our body at the moment of its creation. Therefore, the attitude to the house and its paramatma, Vastu-purusha, should be the same as the attitude to our body. Vastu-purusha has all the parts of the body and vulnerable points on it, so the house must be built so that Vastu-purusha feel good in it, then it will be good for the inhabitants of the house
The story of Vastu Purusha:
One day, Lord Shiva fought the demon Andhaka. The struggle was very bitter and Shiva’s drops of sweat fell to the ground, from which the demon Vastu-purusha was born. The demon was very hungry and began to devour everything that came his way. Other Gods went to Brahma to get protection from the demon and stop the destruction of the world. Brahma pushed Vastu-purusha and he fell, facing the ground. Brahma told the Gods to hold the demon face down, sitting on his part of the body. 45 Gods pounced on the demon and pressed him to the ground. Vastu-purusha could not move under the weight of the Gods and prayed to Brahma for mercy, saying that he was created so hungry and simply followed his nature. Brahma bestowed upon him a blessing and appointed him lord of all the houses and parcels of land that would be built on him. Residents of houses will have to make offerings to him, thereby satisfying his hunger, and in return he will take care of them. But he can also look for food on his own if the residents feed him incorrectly. Those who do not follow the rules of Brahma will awaken the appetite of the eternally hungry Vastu-purushi and will suffer the consequences.
Vastu-purusha is located in space: the feet in the corner to the south-west, the head in the corner to the northeast. Therefore, the northeast corner is considered the most important in Vastu, but all other parts of the body are also important. If there are no parts of the body of Vastu-purush in the apartment, then the owners will have problems.
The plan of any building is based on the Vastu-Purusha mandala with a grid of 8 × 8 (64 equal dimensions — used for temple construction) or 9 × 9 (81 equal dimensions — used for residential and public buildings). In modern terminology, this can be called a material energy grid. The most correct form for a house, apartment, office is a square or rectangle.
Vastu Purusha is the personified energy contained in Vastu, i.e. Energy contained in Matter. The energy lines of the mandala are called meridians. The points of their intersection are sensitive and important points and they should not be occupied by heavy objects or structural elements of the building (walls, partitions, floors, etc.). But the points called marmas are considered especially important. They limit the territory, which is called Brahmastan. Brahmastan is not a flat figure.
Vastu-purusha feels good in the house where there is harmony of space according to the principles of Vastu. In order for Vastu-purusha to feel comfortable in the home, it is necessary that all parts of his body are inside the house, and there are no constructive elements of the building or heavy pieces of furniture on the plates. Otherwise, the balance of energies is disturbed, this leads to a violation of the energy of the house and, as a result, to corresponding problems in the life of the household.
Brihat Samhita says:
If Vastu-purusha is deprived of the head, the person will be deprived of all virtues.
If Vastu-purusha has no legs, the owner’s sons will die, and the owner will weaken, and he will have difficulties because of the women.
But if all the bodily members of Vastu-purusha have proper outlines, the inhabitants of the house will be happy, rich and respected.
